After another day on the beautiful hills and water, we went here for food and a beer. I had Cumberland sausage and mash - the mash was honestly THE most disgusting ‘potato’ I’ve ever tasted in my life. If it wasn’t instant, goodness knows what had been done to it as it was dry and chewy around the edge, and pasty and gross. We regularly frequent pubs ranging from expensive gastro independents to the more basic chain pubs, but never tasted mash like it. How is it difficult to do good mash - *cook potato, add butter and mash* - job done. We were advised on arrival that staff were short and the kitchen was overstretched, and there would be a 15min wait on drinks whilst the bar caught up on orders. Despite the place being less than 1/3 full, we said we more than understood the current national staffing situation and were happy to wait and chat and weren’t in a rush. Orders are placed via you phone using QR codes on the tables, but what I didn’t realise until the end of our meal was that you also pay on ordering (hubby had done it on his phone). We waited patiently for a waiter/ress to come take our plates so I could mention the mash, and when I politely and quietly said thank you, but ‘so you know, the mash was unfortunately, absolutely awful - hence why I’d left it’, she literally just looked at me, said ‘oh, was it?’ took the plate and turned and walked off never to return. Lol! Wouldn’t have paid £4 for it, never mind £11.60. Hubby’s scampi and chips were fine - clearly bagged frozen scampi and chips but was hot and ‘fine’ and he was starving so it went down, but absolutely not worth £13.20. Could have had a better meal from a chippy for half that, and with proper chips. Bowl of side salad we had was actually nice - tasty dressing and fresh, unlike the mash. Beer was pretty tasteless and flat. We completely understand Covid is making work environments very difficult atm (we work in the nhs) but if you can’t get the basics right when charging people good money that we work hard for, either don’t open or reduce he menu on offer and do fewer items properly. I am hungry this morning!

Thwaites Pubs 1st Bad Review ... Visited with family, lovely first impressions, lovely warm room and decor. IMO Covid safety over the top - couldn't order at the bar had to scan a QR code at the table to order, this would have been good if anyone could get a signal in the pub. Faff to log on to pub wifi, and not all options available on the app. Asked for staff to help and was told to try again. We struggled to order whilst three members of staff were propping up the bar - not their fault, but unhelpful rules they are having to follow. Very frustrating. In hindsight we should have just left at this point. Whilst waiting for food we witnessed overly assertive front of house turn away a family at the door saying they were too busy. There were at least 20 vacant tables that we could see. Certainly no one at the tables either side of us and no one in the side room to the left. He then let other families come in, not sure wht that's about? Food when it eventually came was very disappointing, premium price paid for very mediocre food. From the table of 5 of us only one empty plate. Fish was strong, fries were cheap, pie was not hot, Children's chicken meal consisted of 2 very small slices of grilled chicken and a full plate of cheap fries, Lasagna didn't actually taste like lasagna? We left without dessert as didn't want to waste anymore money. Went to the establishment next door, super friendly staff and lovely desserts. Wish we had just gone there in the first place! 1 star given due to lovely room and location.
Thwaites Pubs 2nd Bad Review ... Visited this establishment a few times over the years with my family. It has always been a family orientated country pub with reasonable prices and plenty of room. Since the renovation took place, I have noticed a few areas of improvement. Although the place looks lovely with a country feel running right the way through the pub and restaurant. The atmosphere and the manners from the staff was extremely disappointing. I arrived at a table full of pots from the previous customers who had left almost 30-40 minutes prior to my arrival. After spending 10 minutes sitting around food which was now covered in flies, I decided to move it to another table. I managed to get the attention of a member of staff who was frankly very rude when I asked where I should place the pots and automatically snapped the plates out of my hand while moaning about it. We were ordering drinks at the bar for 6 which seemed to be too much effort for some staff members who rolled their eyes every time I asked for a new drink to be added to my order. The price overall for the drinks was ridiculous and nearly double the price I had paid at other establishments in the area. To finish off our terrible experience we were sat looking at menus for 20 minutes or so before overhearing public discussions about food not being served at 5 in the afternoon. To which I was given a response of “The kitchen has been closed because we have run out of food”. I understand that this can happen but to ignore new customers and not mention this important fact was unreasonable. The overall impact has been disappointing and the look and aesthetics of the establishment has been more of a focus than the run of the business. Truly disappointing end to a holiday in the Lakes.
Thwaites Pubs 3rd Bad Review ... The vegetable soup arrived and this was overpowered with pepper, that was the only thing you could taste. It would of been nice to have a bowl of tasty soup and salt and pepper on the table to add your own but we where just given peppery soup. The first waitress came over again and my friend commented that we could not eat the sandwiches due to them being hard, the waitress was rude and blamed our coach driver for being late and said the sandwiches where fresh and had only been on the table for half an hour, again I said there is no way they where fresh as they where so hard. The waitress picked our plate of sandwiches up and said abruptly that they where fresh, she asked 2 ladies on the next table did they have a problem with their sandwiches in which they replied yes they are hard, the waitress just turned and walked away with our plate of sandwiches. We got no apology just rudeness. Both the sandwiches & soup where awful. I have never been served sandwiches like that before and for them to try to pass them off as fresh is an insult. When back on the coach people also commented that lunch was bad, we carried on with our coach trip and enjoyed the rest if the day.
